Quilted Jacket Sewing Pattern and Knitted Quilt Ideas!
Welcome back to Young Folk Knits! If you’re new here, I’m Kaci, and I share my love for all things fiber arts—knitting, sewing, spinning—along with a peek into life in Arkansas. We keep bees, love our garden, and enjoy spending time outdoors with the animals. If that sounds like your cup of tea, you’re in the right place!
Now, let’s jump into what’s been going on in my knitting and sewing world—because I’ve been a little wild with projects lately!
Sewing Triumph: The Reversible Quilted Jacket
First up, I recently finished a test sew for a reversible quilted jacket pattern by Me and Kiddo Sewing Patterns – the Tove Jacket. https://www.etsy.com/shop/MeAndKiddoPatterns
This one’s special because it’s fully reversible, with two pockets on the outside. I used this beautiful blue floral fabric from Linen Lab and a green linen from Blackbird Fabrics. If you’re ever in the market for fabric, you can use my affiliate code YOUNGFOLKKNITS for 10% off at Linen Lab!
One thing I learned while making this jacket is that the sleeves turned out just a tad too long. I solved that by folding them over slightly, and it works just fine for me. The jacket has simple straight-line quilting, and though it’s a bit challenging (definitely not a beginner project), I love how it turned out. It’s lightweight but cozy—perfect for layering in cooler weather.
Picking Up Old WIPs and Starting New Ones
With my sewing projects wrapped up, I went full speed ahead into knitting! I’ve been picking up old WIPs (works in progress) and even started some new ones because, well, why not?
One of my main projects right now is the Ginny Cardigan by Andrea Mowry: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/ginny I’m using Spin Cycle Metamorphic, a DK-weight wool yarn that’s delightfully bouncy. The cardigan has a belted design with fitted sleeves and a shawl collar, and I want it to hit mid-hip. I’m working on the body now but might switch to the sleeves soon so I can try it on for fit.
Then there’s the Paulie Cardigan—I finished both sleeves and they’re ready to be attached! https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/paulie-cardigan
The yarn I’m using is Heritage DK from North Bay Fiber. It’s a beautiful, lofty wool that’s perfect for this pattern, and I’m curious to see how it holds up with wear. https://www.northbayfiber.com/collections/heritage
Quilt-Inspired Projects & Modular Knitting
I’ve also jumped into another quilt-inspired project with yarn from Flax & Fleece Yarn Co.—the Clint Shawl by Natasha Hornby. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/clint-3 It’s a modular garter stitch shawl, and I love how I can knit just one square at a time. It’s the perfect project to pick up when I need a break from more complex knitting. Each square flies by, and before you know it, you’ve made serious progress.
To go along with all these quilt-inspired projects, I’m also making a big quilted project bag. I wanted something roomy enough to fit all my current knitting, and this bag is coming together beautifully with hand-quilted panels. I’m using fabric scraps and linen from Blackbird Fabrics—perfect for a big tote that can carry multiple projects at once.
Challenges & Decisions in Knitting
A big part of my knitting journey right now is making decisions on the fly. For instance, with the Ginny Cardigan, I’m debating whether I have enough yarn to finish the body, sleeves, shawl collar, and belt. I’m down to three skeins, and while I think it might be enough, I’m not 100% sure. To be safe, I’m going to pause on the body and work on the sleeves and belt first, just to see how much yarn I have left before tackling the shawl collar.
I’m also finishing up the body on my Book Club Cardigan: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/book-club-cardigan
The fit is lightweight and perfect, and I’ve put a lot of thought into where to stop the body in relation to the pocket placement. I didn’t want the pockets to sit too high or have too much body below them. Now it’s just about finishing the button band and the sleeves.
Knitting Books & Inspiration
Lately, I’ve been loving some knitting books that are packed with gorgeous patterns. I recently picked up Laine Magazine: Nordic Knits, and I’m obsessed. Every pattern is beautiful, but I’m especially drawn to the vest on the cover, which I’m planning to make in Rama Garn yarn.
I’m also thrilled to co-host a knit-along for Sari Nordland’s book, Softly Timeless Knits. The Asopo Cardigan is my top choice—it’s a stunning belted cardigan with lovely cable details on the sleeves and pockets. The knit-along kicks off November 1st, so if you want to join in, pick your pattern and yarn, and let’s knit together!
