Fiber Arts in December 2024 with Harlow Plump & Grid Gambit Test Knit
Hello, friends! December is here, and I can hardly believe we’re in the last month of the year. It’s been a whirlwind—full of challenges, reflections, and a lot of knitting. I thought I’d share what’s been going on in my world, from life updates to the projects I’ve been working on and even a few new things I’m excited about. Grab your favorite cozy drink, and let’s chat!
Life Updates: A Bittersweet Month
This past month has been one of the hardest I’ve experienced in a long time. My grandmother, Meme, passed away. She was 90 years old and one of the most unique, adventurous people I’ve ever known. Meme was a world traveler and always brought such vibrance to life. Over the last few months, her health had been declining, and while I’m heartbroken to have lost her, I’m grateful that I got to be with her on her last day.
Before she passed, I told her that the greatest gift she ever gave me was my mom. My mom is truly incredible—my best friend and my constant support. I know not everyone has a relationship like that with their mom, and I don’t take it for granted. While losing Meme has been so difficult, it’s also reminded me to be thankful for the love and memories she gave us.
Overcommitments and Slowing Down
This month, I’ve been thinking a lot about how much I tend to overcommit. I’m such a people-pleaser that I have a hard time saying no, whether it’s to yarn companies, or collaborations. I always want to say yes, and the fear of disappointing someone can make me ignore my own limits.
With everything that’s happened, I’ve realized I need to be more mindful about my time and energy. Crafting is supposed to bring joy, not stress! I’m working on setting boundaries and focusing on projects that make me truly happy. It’s a lesson I’m learning the hard way, but I’m determined to make better choices moving forward.
What I’ve Been Knitting
Despite the chaos, I’ve managed to get a few things done this month! Let me share some of the projects I’ve been working on and the yarns I’ve fallen in love with.
The Harlow Sweater
I’m wearing my Harlow Sweater, which I test-knit for Sabina of Caidree a few years ago. https://www.ravelry.com/projects/YoungFolkKnits/harlow-sweater-2
I used Sonder Yarn co Sunday morning DK, a dreamy blend of BFL and Masham wool. It’s one of my all-time favorite yarns, with a subtle sheen and luxurious feel. I love how this sweater turned out, especially the high collar, which feels modern and cozy.
Grid Gambit Cowl
This cowl, designed by Samantha Guerin, is such a joy to wear. https://www.ravelry.com/projects/YoungFolkKnits/grid-gambit I used a mix of Newburgh Yarn Co. DK in the color Adirondack Haze and some of my own handspun. The bias-knit design is perfect for showcasing handspun yarn, and I love how it drapes. Initially, I left the bottom partially open for a looser fit but decided to sew it up a bit more—and now it’s perfect! I’m already planning another one because it’s such a satisfying knit.
Plumped-Up Harlow Hat
Andrea Mowry’s Plumped-Up Harlow Hat is another finished project this month. https://www.ravelry.com/projects/YoungFolkKnits/plumped-up-harlow It’s a brioche hat knit in Spin Cycle Plump yarn, that I paired with The Farmer’s Daughter Fibers bulky weight yarn. I love the squishy texture of brioche—it’s so satisfying to knit, even if it does take a bit longer. This hat is reversible, and the tubular cast-on makes both sides look polished. It’s a quick knit that’s perfect for gifts or keeping your own head warm!
A Fun New Cast-On: The Gujo Collar
This month, I also cast on the Gujo Collar by Aegyoknit, using Manos del Uruguay’s Ideal yarn. https://www.ravelry.com/projects/YoungFolkKnits/gujo-collar It’s a worsted-weight Polwarth wool, and I can’t get over how soft and springy it feels. The collar is knit in half-fisherman’s rib, which creates a beautifully squishy fabric. I love the clean, modern design—it’s so chic and versatile. While it’s a bit slow-going, I think the end result will be totally worth it.
Knitalongs and Cozy Projects
I’m also co-hosting the Softly KAL, a knitalong for projects from Sari Nordlund’s Softly book. I chose the Apollonis Pullover, a classic circular-yoke sweater knit in Camellia Fiber Co. Serene Aran. https://www.ravelry.com/projects/YoungFolkKnits/apollonis
The yarn is non-superwash merino, and it’s so soft and buttery to work with. The simple stockinette body makes this a relaxing, meditative knit—exactly what I need right now.
New Acquisitions: Books and Bags
I recently got my hands on Charlotte Stone’s latest sock book, which is full of adorable colorwork patterns. Joyful Colorwork Socks https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/charming-colorwork-socks-25-delightful-knitting-patterns-for-colorful-comfy-footwear My favorite is the “Whoops a Daisy” design, with its whimsical floral motif. I’m also in love with the “Fancy a Cuppa” socks, featuring teacups and teapots—so perfect for a tea lover like me.
What I’m Reading and Watching
I just started Raven Black by Anne Cleeves, the first book in the Shetland series. It’s beautifully atmospheric, and I love how it captures the woolly charm of Shetland life. As for TV, I haven’t been watching much lately, but I’m always on the lookout for British mysteries or comedies. If you have any recommendations, let me know!
Wrapping Up
This month has been a rollercoaster, but sharing my projects and thoughts with you always feels like a bright spot. Crafting has a way of grounding me, even when life gets overwhelming.
I’d love to hear what you’re working on—whether it’s knitting, spinning, or something else entirely. Drop a comment and let me know, and until next time, happy knitting!

Sorry for your loss. Just remember that every time you think of Meme or talk about her that she is there with you. Love your podcast. You always inspire me. Take care of yourself and stay strong. ❤️
Thank you!
I am so sorry for the loss of Meme. I hope you take great comfort in all the memories you have shared with her and it helps you through this difficult time. I always enjoy your podcasts and admire your WIPs and all your FOs. Keep inspiring and take care of yourself ❤️
Thank you!
Kaci, i’m so sorry for your loss. My grandmother was like my second mother and our family still talks about her every time we get together. She’s a regular part of our family conversations, so her love lives on. I hope that very soon your grief can turn to cherished memories.
I am constantly over committing myself as well, so I Have set a hard and fast rule that I can only do one test knit sweater at a time. Smaller projects like hats are not such a big deal, but sweaters are different story. For me anyway.
I am currently swatching For a test Knight and trying to find just the right MC of white. Then I’m also working on a baby gift blanket for a friend who had her baby in September! I am way late!!!
Thank you for sharing as always, and merry Christmas to you and your family
