Wrapping Up the Year: Knitting, Spinning, and Sewing Goals
Hello, friends! It’s Kaci here from YoungFolk Knits, and today I wanted to share a little bit about how I’m wrapping up the year in my fiber arts journey. As 2024 winds down, I’ve been reflecting on what I’ve accomplished, what’s still on the needles, and what I’d love to finish before the clock strikes midnight on December 31st.
If you’re into knitting, spinning, sewing, or anything fiber-related—or even just curious about life on a small farm in Arkansas—you’re in the right place. Grab your favorite cozy drink, and let’s dive into my current projects, reflections, and a few lessons learned.
The End-of-Year Realization
Can you believe we’re halfway through December? This month has me looking back at my maker notebook, preparing for my “What I Made in 2024” wrap-up video, and realizing… I’ve got some unfinished business. Normally, having a few UFOs (unfinished objects) doesn’t bother me, but this year, I feel a little more compelled to wrap things up.
To make this manageable, I’ve started setting weekly goals. This approach has been helping me stay focused and, honestly, makes the whole process a lot more enjoyable. Here’s what I’m working on this week:
Project Spotlight #1: Alma Mittens
First up, the Alma Mittens. https://www.ravelry.com/projects/YoungFolkKnits/alma These classic Scandinavian-style mittens feature beautiful all-over colorwork with a flower motif. I was inspired to make these after seeing Florence from Handmade by Florence knit her pair, and they turned out stunning.
I’m using Purl Soho’s Daily Wool, which is incredibly soft and bouncy. And the silky feel on the inside makes these mittens irresistible.
I’m halfway through my second mitten, and finishing it this week feels totally doable. A quiet evening with a good movie might be all I need to wrap this up.
Project Spotlight #2: Lumme Pullover
Next on the list is my Lumme Pullover by Sari Nordlund: https://www.ravelry.com/projects/YoungFolkKnits/lumme
This colorwork circular yoke sweater is absolutely stunning. I’m using Isager Alpaca 3, a chainette yarn made from a blend of alpaca and wool. The yarn has a soft, airy texture with a beautiful halo, but it’s been a bit of a mixed bag for me.
On one hand, it’s cozy and plush, perfect for a winter sweater. On the other hand, the chainette structure catches on my needles, and binding off has been tricky—it keeps splitting. Despite these challenges, I’m committed to finishing this sweater by year’s end. I just have the sleeves and body left to knit!sta
Project Spotlight #3: Mockingbird Shawl
This project combines my love for spinning and knitting. I’m working on the Mockingbird Shawl, a squishy, cozy design that I test knit.
For this, I’ve been spinning my own yarn using the Ozark Dreaming colorway by Primrose Yarn Co.
I recently ran out of handspun, so my goal this week is to finish spinning and plying the last braid. I’ve been using the Daedalus Starling V3 spinning wheel, and let me just say—it’s a dream. https://www.daedalusspinningwheels.com/starling-v3.
The cranberry color is gorgeous, and it’s hands-down my favorite electric spinner so far. I can’t wait to see how the shawl turns out with this final batch of yarn.
Setting Goals and Finding Peace
One thing I’ve learned this month is the value of breaking projects into smaller, achievable goals. Tackling one thing at a time makes everything feel more realistic—and less overwhelming.
I’m also making a conscious effort to slow down and enjoy the quiet moments. My daily walks to the pond on our farm are a highlight. Sometimes I knit, sometimes I just soak in the peace. Watching the geese that visit our pond fills me with so much joy—it’s a reminder to savor the little things.
A Quick Recommendation: The Wild Robot
Speaking of little joys, I have to mention the book and movie The Wild Robot. My kids and I absolutely loved it. It’s heartwarming, and I’ll admit—I cried three times while watching it! If you’re looking for a sweet story to share with your family, I highly recommend it.
A Fun Sew: Ginko Pinafore
Before I wrap up, I have to talk about my latest sewing project: the Ginko Pinafore. https://madswick.com I had the pleasure of test sewing this for MadsWick Designs in collaboration with The Linen Lab. The wrap design ties in the front and back, making it super versatile and flattering.
The fabric I chose is a beautiful plaid in red, brown, and blue tones—perfect for the season. https://linenlab.co.kr/YOUNGFOLKKNITS. Use code YOUNGFOLKKNITS for 10% off your entire order!
If you’re thinking of making one, I’d recommend considering a full bust adjustment for the best fit. It’s such a versatile piece, and I already have plans to sew another one with a square neck option!
